Chevy Silverado Alternator Cost: $480 to $750

For the 5.3L L83 and L84 V8 at an independent shop with a reman ACDelco. The 6.2L L86/L87 runs slightly higher at $500 to $790. The 3.0L Duramax diesel is the most expensive Silverado at $580 to $830 because of intercooler piping. The LS-family V8 alternator is one of the easiest jobs in this catalog, and a strong DIY candidate.

Field 02 / DIY

Why The Silverado V8 Is Such An Easy DIY

On every LS-family Silverado V8 (4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L, 6.2L) since the GMT900 generation, the alternator mounts at the top of the engine on the passenger side. There is nothing physically in front of it. The serpentine belt path is direct (crank, alternator, AC compressor, idler, tensioner, water pump, return); the tensioner rotates on a 15mm bolt with no hidden fasteners; the alternator harness has two connections (the output post under a 13mm nut and a two-wire field plug).

An experienced DIY mechanic does this job in 35 to 45 minutes. First-timers finish in 60 to 75. The only torque you need to watch is the mounting bolts at 37 ft-lb on the LS3 series and 33 ft-lb on the L83 and later. Belt routing diagrams are printed on the underhood sticker on every Silverado in this catalog.

The 3.0L Duramax is a different story. The diesel runs a separate belt path with the alternator down low on the passenger side, partially obscured by the intercooler outlet pipe. Reaching it requires removing the air intake duct, the intercooler outlet hose, and a section of the lower charge piping. First-time DIY: 3 hours. Most owners pay the shop on the Duramax.

Towing And Plowing Shorten Alternator Life

A Silverado dragging a 6,000 to 9,000 pound trailer pulls noticeably more current than a street truck: electric trailer brakes alone draw 20 to 30 amps during stops, and electric coolers, work lights, and inverter loads stack on top. Snow plows are worse: the plow motor itself can pull 200 amps in bursts when raising, lowering, and angling. Continuous high-current duty heats the alternator regulator and shortens diode pack life.

For trucks with these duty cycles, two things help. First, the factory 170A tow-package alternator if you have not already got it; the part is roughly $30 more new and identical to install. Second, an aftermarket 240 to 320A unit from Mechman or DC Power; $480 to $720 installed, and they last considerably longer under heavy duty than the stock 150A unit. See high-output alternator cost for the upgrade math.

Frequently Asked: Chevy Silverado

How much does a Silverado 1500 alternator cost?+

On the 5.3L L83 and 6.2L L86 (LS-family V8s), $480 to $750 at an independent shop with a reman ACDelco. On the 3.0L Duramax LM2 diesel, $580 to $830 because the alternator sits closer to the firewall and the intercooler piping is in the way. Chevy dealer pricing runs $620 to $1,000 on the V8s. The LS-family alternator is one of the easier ones in the catalog.

Is the Silverado alternator a DIY job?+

Yes, on every V8 Silverado from the 2014 K2 platform onward. The alternator sits at the very top of the engine, passenger side, with completely clear access. Tools needed: 13mm and 15mm sockets, a 15mm wrench for the tensioner, torque wrench. First-time DIY: 45 to 60 minutes. This is one of the easiest pickup alternator jobs in the industry. The 3.0L Duramax is harder and not recommended for first-timers.

What alternator brand should I buy?+

ACDelco (the GM original equipment supplier) is the safe choice. Bosch supplies several Silverado model years and is an excellent aftermarket option. Cardone and Remy reman are widely sold and acceptable. Avoid no-brand units under $80; Silverado trucks regularly tow and the charging system runs hard, so cheap alternators fail quickly under that duty.

How long does the Silverado alternator last?+

130,000 to 200,000 miles is typical on the V8s. The LS-family alternators are conservatively sized (150A on the standard, 170A on tow-package trucks) which helps longevity. Trucks used for serious towing, snow plowing, or with significant aftermarket loads see 100,000 to 140,000 miles. The 3.0L Duramax is slightly shorter-lived because of underhood heat.

Should I upgrade the Silverado alternator amperage?+

Only with concrete justification. The factory 170A tow-package unit handles trailer braking, electric coolers, and most aftermarket light bars without breaking a sweat. Upgrade only if you run a winch, a competition audio system, an inverter pulling more than 1,500W continuously, or you have added 8 plus high-draw LED light bars. Mechman and DC Power sell 240 to 320A upgrade units for $480 to $720 with direct-fit Silverado brackets.

What about the eAssist and ZeroGravity hybrid Silverados?+

The 2016 to 2018 eAssist Silverado used a small motor-generator that supplemented but did not replace the alternator. Both components exist; the alternator is replaceable normally. The 2024 onward Silverado EV has no alternator at all (full electric, DC-DC converter feeds 12V). The 2025 onward 5.3L hybrid uses a belt-integrated motor-generator that handles 12V charging; a separate alternator is not present.
