What Else to Replace When Getting a New Alternator (and What to Skip)

When the alternator comes out, several other components are already exposed and accessible. Replacing them now adds minimal labor cost. Replacing them later as a separate visit means paying full labor again.

The Bundle Principle

Bundling all recommended add-ons during alternator replacement saves $200 to $500 compared to doing them as separate visits later.

Bundle Savings Table

ComponentPart CostExtra Labor (During)Cost as Separate VisitNet Savings
Serpentine belt$20 to $50Near zero$150 to $250$100 to $200
Belt tensioner$40 to $80$15 to $25$150 to $250$80 to $150
Idler pulley$15 to $30$10 to $15$80 to $150$50 to $100
Battery (if weak)$100 to $200Near zero$150 to $300$50 to $100

Serpentine Belt: ALWAYS Replace if Over 60,000 Miles

The serpentine belt is already removed during alternator replacement. Putting it back on costs nothing extra. A new belt costs $20 to $50 in parts. If the belt fails later as a separate repair, you are looking at $150 to $250 for parts and labor.

Even if the belt looks fine visually, rubber degrades internally with age and mileage. Most manufacturers recommend replacing serpentine belts at 60,000 to 100,000 miles. Full serpentine belt replacement cost guide.

Belt Tensioner: Replace if Over 80,000 Miles or Pulley Is Rough

The tensioner keeps proper pressure on the serpentine belt. A worn tensioner causes belt noise, uneven belt wear, and eventually belt slippage or failure. The part costs $40 to $80 and adds about 15 minutes of labor during alternator work.

Ask your mechanic to spin the tensioner pulley by hand while the belt is off. If it feels rough, grinds, or has any play, replace it. A tensioner failure later costs $150 to $250 as a separate visit.

Battery: Replace if Over 4 Years Old or Testing Weak

The battery is already disconnected during alternator work. If it tests weak or is over 4 years old, replacing it now adds near-zero extra labor. A new battery costs $100 to $200.

A weak battery stresses the new alternator by forcing it to continuously charge at high output. This can shorten the new alternator's lifespan. How long does a car battery last?

Idler Pulley: Replace if Noisy or Has Play

The idler pulley is a passive guide for the serpentine belt. It costs $15 to $30 and takes 5 to 10 minutes to swap while the belt is already off. Cheap insurance against future belt noise or failure.

What to Skip

Mechanics who recommend these alongside alternator work are upselling. These components are unrelated to the alternator job and do not benefit from being done at the same time:

  • Starter motor: Different part of the engine, separate access point. No labor savings from bundling.
  • Water pump: Not exposed during alternator work on most vehicles (exception: vehicles where the serpentine belt drives the water pump and it is easily accessible).
  • AC compressor: Separate system entirely. Requires refrigerant recovery and recharge equipment.
